Thought I would start a thread on here to see just how many people in our branch would care to be interested enough, seeing not much else is happening on the site these days, not sure where everyone has hibernated to? Jot down what Natural Hazards could be on the Road over winter there are plenty, so we should end up with a big list right !!!!!!
I will start...................ICE

Snow. I got caught in Waiouru 2 weeks ago and had to spend the night in the local pub. Certainly wouldn't recommend the Kai there. Bike had 4 inches of snow in the morning, complete with a frozen ignition barrel. Had to head over to the gas station and purchase a lighter to heat the key. (Some Canadian experience kicking in there) Desert road was closed, but saw a guy on a Yamaha head off towards National Park thought he was brave. I spent a couple of hours at the army museum, then headed north via Nation Park. Road was wet but no ice, temp got down to 1.5. Went under the viaduct 20ks south of NP and there was the Yamaha in a heap with a sorry looking rider and lots of helpers around. Didn't stop as there were plenty of people around and surface was very slippery due to the grit that had been put down.
Rest of the ride was both enjoyable and uneventful for Moko's 1st birthday in Auckland. Waited till Monday for fine weather and a good ride home. Kiaran

Deciduous trees and the leaves that fall off them, pine needles, moss, F...ing idiots that don't turn their lights on when it's getting dark, the same idiots that won't turn their lights down to low when approaching you, the idiot cyclists that won't wear fluro gear or have lights on their chosen form of transport??? (go figure) Water filled potholes when it's raining, road marking, i.e. white and yellow lines, (very slippery when wet!) Well, there you go, that's a few! Oh! One more, the yellow coloured sodium lights that illuminate the majority of our intersections. In wet weather they make the road markings almost invisible!
